Neal Maupay hits back at Everton fans who abused own players at train station

One Everton fan was heard shouting ‘80 grand a week? You f—ing w—-r’ at London Euston after the heavy defeat against Tottenham

Striker Neal Maupay has hit out at Everton supporters who barracked players at Euston station following Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing at Tottenham.
The defeat – courtesy of goals by Yves Bissouma, Cristian Romero and a Son Heung-min double – followed a 3-0 humbling at Goodison Park by Brighton on the opening weekend of the Premier League season and has left Everton bottom of the table on goal difference.
Everton have been dragged into desperate battles against relegation for the past three seasons and this campaign threatens to be another grim fight.
The anger among a section of the travelling support boiled over on Saturday night at Euston  as the Everton squad made their way to the train north. Several players were picked out for foul-mouthed abuse, with fans shouting “F— off, you f—ing rat. F—ing 80 grand a week? You f—ing w—-r.”
Most of the players walked to the train with their heads down, although goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and defender Mason Holgate tried to placate the fans.
Maupay, who has been a regular target for critics following his poor Everton form and who spent last season on loan at Brentford, took a swipe back on Sunday night, saying on X: “Imagine another job where it’s normalised to get abuse like this. Hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best…”
Manager Sean Dyche is facing growing criticism over his team selection and tactics, although he has blamed injuries and a weak squad for his side’s faltering start to the campaign. However he antagonised many fans last week when he said before the Tottenham game: “We have spoken about this before many times… hero, zero, zero, hero. This is quite an extreme place. It is either, ‘Yes we’re amazing, we won’  or ‘rubbish, you’re all rubbish again.’ That kind of psychology en masse.”
Dyche’s cause has not been helped by Everton’s parlous financial position – they were hit twice last season with points deductions due to breaches of Profitability and Sustainability Rules – as well as uncertainty over whether current owner Farhad Moshiri can sell the club.
The manager might have to sell either defender Jarrad Branthwaite or Dominic Calvert-Lewin before Friday’s transfer deadline and Saturday’s home fixture against Bournemouth is already looking like a game he cannot afford to lose.
